S.A. - Customs and fingerprinting

Hey, do they fingerprint foreigners when arriving in South Africa from another country?

matnikstym Apr 25th, 2008 05:38 PM

I've never been fingerprinted in S.A.

sniktawk Apr 25th, 2008 08:13 PM

Would it worry you if they did?

HariS Apr 25th, 2008 10:42 PM

That's a USA thing, isn't it? Finger printing visitors! I have no problem with it, though - get me through quick these days!

DonTopaz Apr 26th, 2008 02:52 AM

It's also a Japanese thing.

Grcxx3 Apr 26th, 2008 05:25 AM

wouldn't bother me....but never had it done in SA

Hiding from someone?

Wingi Apr 26th, 2008 05:31 AM

It's when they put a barcode in your neck that you need to worry!

walkinaround Apr 26th, 2008 09:20 AM

yes, it is also a japanese thing and it's also a british thing very shortly. and in the uk all passengers from t5 will be fingerprinted and the programme will be extended outward to all airports. i was in SA about 6 months ago and there was no fingerprinting.

atravelynn Apr 26th, 2008 09:52 AM

Not that I recall, but your luggage may get delayed.

I'm ready to shove any body part requested into the ink then on the blotter this July.

pippa13 Apr 29th, 2008 12:19 PM

not yet ;-)

DonTopaz Apr 29th, 2008 02:42 PM

Does the US use ink when FPing visitors? In Japan, they have a simple and quick system that involves no mess, muss, or fuss (as you might expect from that nation). Just place you index fingers on the little holder, and you're done in 5 seconds.

<<and in the uk all passengers from t5 will be fingerprinted and the programme will be extended outward to all airports.>>

in which millenium?

what price t5 managing to do anything properly, let alone match people and fingerprints accuately?

HariS Apr 29th, 2008 06:46 PM

Rizzuto,

No ink (thank God!) ..... they have a small screen where you place your fingers (index fingers) and they match up your old travel records. It's easy and fast - JFK being the best, in terms of aware/educated officers and staff.

Cheers
Hari

@ hariS
i just spoke to a colleague who migrated via JFK:
migration to them almost 3,5 hrs!
obviously JFK and miami are the worst!

HariS Apr 30th, 2008 06:13 AM

Pippa,

You mean immigration?

Bad luck to your friend!!! - i like JFK and will stick to it!

Don't know Miami, and don't intend going there!
