Mincepie,
I stayed at Roggeland a couple of years ago...it's a very lovely old country house hotel which my husband loved. It's very old fashioned, in terms of the decor but in a rather charming way. I liked it but found that the set four course meal in the evenings was rather rigid and not suited for a longer stay.

However the peple were very nice in sum it has a rather charming feel but isn't terrribly up to date.

Mincepie,

I can only comment on three of your accommodation choices viz.

Parkes Manor Lodge
Klippe Rivier Country House
Roggeland Country House

There is nothing wrong with any of these lodges however in the relevant areas imho you could obtain better value for money as well as a more personalised experience if you stay at other venues.

Parkes is ok but there is nothing to make it "special" in my opinion. I would rather suggest that in Knysna you look at Overmeer (http://www.overmeergh.co.za/) or Falcon View Crescent (http://www.falconsview.com/)

Klippe River is outpriced in the Swellendam area and lives on a reputation of being a classy place to stay. While it is a place for good accommodation there definitely is better value to be found in Swellendam. Furthermore as far as I am concerned
the homely attention you will find in the places I am going to suggest to you is much better than at Klippe Rivier
My suggestion is look at Adin and Sharon's hideaway (http://www.adinbb.co.za/) as well as Braeside Lodge (http://www.braeside.co.za/index2.html)

Welltravlledbrit has given you an excellent summary of Roggeland. The only factor that I would like to add is that Roggeland is reasonably far from the town of Paarl. If you want to stay in Paarl as opposed to towns like Stellenbosch or Franschhoek when visiting the winelands why dont you take a look at Pontac Manor (http://www.pontac.com/

In summary in my opinion all of the above 3 venues that you speak of are good places to stay. What they lack is the little bit of extra special friendliness that one obtains when one stays at a guesthouse that is owned and run by the owners themselves. My suggestions lead you this type of guesthouse. Falcons View owners (Canadian) are not always on the premises but even so their venue is well run by a local young South African couple who virtually regard the place as being their own. Pontac is also not owner run but the friendly staff come a very close second to making you feel that the place is run as such. Anyway unless there is a specific reason as to why you want to visit the Paarl area I would not advocate town as a place of stays. I feel that if you are visiting the Winelands the Franschhoek and Stellenbosch areaa is streets ahead when it comes for things to do etc.

A big question that comes up is "what you are looking for in accommodation"?. It seems as if you are looking for a stylish type experience. If that is the case I would suggest that you stay with your choices. If on the other hand you are looking for a more local, friendly type experience go take a look at the suggestions that I have made to you as they might provide you with this type of journey.

Hope the above helps.

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa

Thanks very much for your replies about Parkes Manor and Roggeland...we will certainly take them into consideration. Really hoping that someone has info on Djuma and Xigera.
