Cash in Uganda

In Tanzania the money of choice seemed to be the American dollar. Is it the same in Uganda?

When I was last there in 2004, I did not find that dollars were readily accepted at the camps. This is in contrast to many other Africa destinations I have been. There is a money exchange at the airport or you can go to a bank in the cities. My guide encouraged us to get adequate money upon arrival because there would not be much opportunity for changing later. This was also the case on previous Uganda trips.

Have a nice trip in a wonderful country.

I had same experience as atravelynn - dollars were not always accepted. Definitely change plenty of money at the airport! Someone on our trip ran out of shillings - our guide insisted she borrow money from him, as it would have taken too long to find somewhere for her to change money and he said the exchange rates were going to be very bad outside of Kampala.

Patty,
Great Lakes told us not to count on being able to locate any ATM in Kampala (or elsewhere!) that would work w/our cards and so to bring plenty of cash to change money. Others who spent time in Kampala might have other thoughts on this though since I only changed money at the airport after arrival.

Hey tuskerdave -
Yeah I think in my case the issue was that I wasn't going to be in Kampala long enough to change money so I had to do it at the airport, although they definitely did make it sound as if there were no working ATMs anywhere in uganda...
Have a fabulous time on your trip back to Uganda! can't wait to hear about it when you return.

I wish I was having a trip there but in fact am wanting to get a bit of money to someone living there. Since I don't know if I could get shillings here, would US money be of any value to them?
