Nice additions.

We have a similar 5-legged ele shot from Tarangire. After seeing yours I think I'm glad my photo was taken with a crappy point-and-shoot--far, far less detail.

It's you that has the "wrong" monitor. I calibrate my Sony CRT and pictures such as Andy Biggs look very nice. Almost all of yours are dark on my monitor. Dark and maybe the gamma is too low. If a person is serious about working with digital images, you must have a good calibrated monitor.
regards - tom
ps - not that hard to do, a good CRT and Spyder calibrater should be around $400. We spend 20 times that on camera gear and the monitor is just as important as any piece of it.

Hi Rocco,
With the new photos that have a red appearance, is this from the spotlight having the red cover? CCAfrica in Londolozi now do this, and I suppose they use the red cover at every CCA lodge now. I couldn't really keep those photos as I didn't like the red glow. Shame because the porcupine is nice and clear, though red!

Kind regards,

Welcome Back Rocco,
I love the photos and I love reading your travelling tales. With all these great trip reports my visits to the library have gone waaaaay down!
By the way, you will be glad to know that you've convinced me that Zambia has to be part of my next trip(it won't work for this summer, but I'm already
planning for 2007!)

Sorry you spent $400 only so that you could not see my images properly. The photos look great on my computer monitor and that is good enough for me!

You are correct. These photos are from the night game drive at Lake Manyara Tree Lodge in CCAfrica's vehicle. I would have loved to have taken a better photo of that porcupine, but it was not to be.

Fortunately, at sightings when the animal did not immediately run off, such as my photo of the bushbaby, I did ask the guide to use his small flashlight to allow me a photo. The challenge with using a small flashlight is that I was only able to put my shutter speed at about 1/20th of a second on ISO 1600, not making for the best photos.

It would have been great to get that Eagle Owl, also, without the red light, and we did come across two lionesses on a kill, as well, that I have not even featured due to having red lighting. While I understood why they were using the red lights on the porcupine, owl and bushbaby, it seemed odd to use it on lions.

The new additions are great. Only you could have found and captured that over-endowed elephant. You do seem to find all the unique and amazing shots.

As for the red tinted night shots - you shot and captured exactly what the image was - I like it.
Keep them coming!

Wow! Really cool. Loved the picture of the lion who climbed the tree! Didn't know they could do that!

Just wanted to mention that I have added 2-3 dozen photos since some of you first saw the photo album, including a few favorites.

It will take me weeks to get all the photos up that I want to, however.

Enjoy the newest additions and I will let you all know when I add another couple dozen.

Well done Rocco! Beautiful shots. I especially like the lion roaring in the tree.
