Rhino's in Time for Christmas.
 

On the world news today and in our local newpaper, the Czech Zoo has transferred Four White Rhinos to the Ol' Pejeta Reserve in Central Kenay.

( Ol Pejeta is about 16 miles northwest of Nanyuki...it was a cattle ranch once but is now called Sweetwaters Game Reserve and Rhino Sanctuary )

The director ( Dana Holeckova) of the Czech Zoo went along for the 24 hour journey.

She says there " is a 90 % chance they will reproduce".

Their aim is to start a Northern White Rhino group in Africa ( Kenya ).

Ms. Holeckova was emotion about the Rhinos ( understandably so ), as she said:

"We have sent you the diamonds of our zoo, the last fertile Northern White Rhinos kept in captivity."
"They are beautiful animals , take care of them and don't give them to poachers."

The Rhino were happy to come out of their containers and into their large enclosures in the middle of the savannah with Acacia trees in the enclosure also. !
I saw pictures of it on TV.

Gee !! Why can't I be there for Christmas !

IT's big news here as well.

It's a wonderful thing and I would hope that they don't get poached! I don't think Ol Pejeta has the means to safeguard these precious animals on a 24/7/365 basis.

Most certainly the Chinese pay a fortune, they are already in the country and Mombasa is close :-(.

I hope they survive - but I am not too optimistic.

protection will be better than if they were just set loose to

The pictures looked nice and the enclosures have a nice spot for them to be under a canopy for shade.

SV, I would be very surprised if these animals aren't very well protected. The same set up is in place now as at Lewa and I can't remember the last time either sanctuary had a poaching incident. I believe that they have daily aerial patrols, tracker dogs on patrol as well as various other protective measures. We can only hope that they do reproduce.

Okay then - let's hope these awesome creature breed happily!

Our local newspaper had an article that quoted someone as saying it's too little too late and that expecting reproduction by these rhinos is, essentially, pie in the sky. Here's a link to the article:

sf7307, yes I had heard those arguments as well. Can't help but hope some African magic dust is sprinkled over these particular rhinos, now that the animals have endured the long and risky flight.
