Rhino trekking - black and/or white...............
is possible where?
Is there anybody out there who has done this in other places than Meru and or Nakuru? Your advise will be highly appreciated. SV |

I hope there are some left White--Phinda, South Africa It was also possible to track black rhino in Phinda but harder to find them. I did not know you could track rhino in Meru or Nakuru. Can you share any details in those places please? |

Thanks for your contribution - but it has to be Kenya! When we stayed at Elsa's Kopje in Meru we visited the black rhino sanctuary. But that experience is more kind of "zoo" thing. In Nakuru there is also a sanctuary and they even translocate to Meru. By now I did a bit of research and found Laikipia Ol Peteja, Lewa Downs, Sweetwaters camp, Kicheche) in Kenya which says it has the biggest black Rhino population (approx. 70) besides the white rhinos and big cats, plains game, grevy's zebra etc. That sounds promising to me. My research continues ;-) SV |
Did you track rhino on foot in Meru and Nakuru? I would be interested in more details too.

I tried to do a rhino tracking outing at Lewa, but the staff really wanted it to be just a walk and so it was. I'm not sure if it was because the rhino were not around or if my rhino-tracking mates might not have been up to the task and you can just call it quits on a walk anytime, or what.
But the rhino viewing from the vehicle at Lewa was very good. It's nice to know there are places like Ol Peteja and Lewa Downs where rhino can thrive. |
