I posted this question on Trip Advisor and would like the opinions of the posters here. Much thanks...ragsi

Restaurants I like and which I recently visited while I was in CPT:

My top four:

- Ginja (Castle street);
- Jardine (Bree street);
- La Colombe (Constantia Uitsig);
- Tasting room at le quartier Francais (Franschoek).

In summertime, you need to book in advance to be sure to have a table in these ones.

Others I can easily go back to:

- Beluga;
- Buitenverwachting;
- Aubergine;
- Savoy cabbage.

I went to "the showroom" and "Baia" but I didn't like them that much.

Have a look at the following website:

Hi

I went to 95 Keerom, Five Flies and Savoy cabbage and I was very satisfied with them. I did try to book a table at Jardine several times but they were always fully booked.

Regards

We eat most of our meals down by the Waterfront in Cape Town. On our last trip we really enjoyed Balthazars.

waterfront: baia/seafood; booking essential!
constantia uitzig: river cafe for lunch (wonderful salads!), try "belgian chocolate mousse cake!
franschhoek: restaurant QLF - margot is an awesome chef awarded with "one of the best 50 restaurants in the world" for the last 6 or 7 consecutive years - for dinner! try here her signature dish: smoked salmon on salmon fritters followed by springrolls filled with chocolate! reservation essential!
franschhoek: bred+wine at moreson wine estate for lunch; very nice light fare.
grande roche, paarl: wonderful seatings for lunch on the terrasse!
mount nelson for tea time
all restaurants in camps bay along the beach.
CPT/houte bay: mariner's warf

pippa - just trying to remember....is baia the one that is owned by the same people at balthazars?

If my fuzzy memory serves - balthazars is mainly outside with big umbrellas (we had heaters too since it was chilly) and has a inside wine bar. Is that right? And baia is kind of around the corner from it, some inside tables and some outside.

Do I have that right?

Yup - long haul from Germany. We did the SAA flight from Frankfurt - Cape Town when we went last time.!!!

My mind is fuzzy due to the wine.......but we actually thought Balthazar's was better. We had some bad service at Baia's that might have clouded our judgement - but we definitely didn't put it on our "repreat" list.

What sort of dress code is required for these restaurants? Some of them seem rather high end. Luggage space is limited, so I'm unlikely to take a sports coat or dress shoes with me. However, I could manage a polo shirt and nice pair of pants.

lifelist - from what I understand, Cape Town is very casual, unless you are dining at the Cape Grace Hotel. I think nice slacks and shirt/top is fine.
