Restaurant recs for dinner in Stonetown

A number of people have mentioned that they were disappointed in the meal at Emerson and Green. Where have readers had a great dinner in Stonetown? I don't care about the cost, do care about the quality of the food and the ambience--a table with a view preferred. Not picky eaters. It will be our first dinner in a restaurant after 9 nights of safari tent camp dinners so I would like something very nice.

My choice for a romantic dinner in Stone Town is the Tradewinds Restaurant in the Africa House Hotel.

There are other choices outside Stone Town that require a taxi ride.

Yeah, the upstairs restaurant at the Serena is a bit big but OK however every time I go there we have problems with the seagulls!

When they opened the big glass windows the gulls flew in and basically attacked me and my food! During breakfast on our 1st morning, we got up to visit the buffet. I looked back and saw half a dozen all over our table and the staff just laughed before chasing them off after seeing my dismay!

Yikes!
Genets at Olduvai and gulls at the Serena Zbar--did not realize there would be such up close and way-too-personal game viewing at meals.

I found a website for La Fenice--must have some Italian owners/chef because some dishes are Italian (homemade Italian ice cream, for example) others African--

Still curious if anyone has been there.

One of my favorites is Monsoon Restaurant, just off Forodhani Gardens, on the sea side of the tunnel. They serve excellent Swahili fare. Inside, you sit on pillows on the floor. Certain nights (Thursdays?) they have music. They also have a few tables outside, but I enjoy the atmosphere inside.

There is a restaurant across from the Tembo House that I think is called the Fisherman's House(?). It's not much to look at, but our guide recommended it and the seafood was great.

I've had lunch a couple of times at Mtoni Marine. The food was good and you've got a nice view of the ocean. It's a popular stop to or from spice farm tours.

the receptionist in E&G also recommended Monsoon restaurant, and said he thought it very good value.
we went to the actual food markets ourselves but ate very little. the same receptionist warned us that a group of guests a few nights before had eaten some fish down at the markets and had all become ill - funny tummys etc.
god I just seem to be the voice of doom and gloom! sorry
