Rabat, Morocco for a day?

We (couple with 3 boys, ages 15, 12 and 6) will be touring Andalusia in Sept and wondered about Morocco for a day trip. Tangiers sounds so bad, is it feasible to go to Rabat for a day? Would we need to take our rental car?
Thanks.

If you only have one day, Rabat will be difficult (even with a car). From Spain, you would probably take the ferry at Algeciras. Crossing from Algeciras to Tangier takes about three hours (so the return trip will take up to six hours out of your day). Personally, I prefer Tangier to Rabat, having spent time in both cities. The souks are fun, and the easy going pace is a welcome change. If this is your first visit to Morocco, expect a bit of a culture shock. Of course, this is part of the adventure. Since you only have one day, you may not have the chance to fully "adapt". I once spent over two months travelling in Morocco. After the first week, I felt very comfortable with the people, the culture, the food... Write me directly if you would like more information.
