Questions about Cape Town & Knysna

First visit to CT in January - staying a week in CT and then onto Knysna for a week there. Can't wait!!! Hope you guys out there can help with a few q's (Selwyn?? you seem to be the resident expert..!)

1. Picking up a car at CT airport, driving down to the Waterfront area (staying in the Cullinan). Is that a pretty straightforward drive? Well signposted?

2. Banking - will be taking visa and mastercards, and will rely on ATMs - is the Cirrus card also recognised in South Africa?

3. Is there a big mosquito problem in the evenings? They usually zoom straight in for me if they're out there...

Thanks everyone.

Alison,

Firstly heres hoping that you will enjoy Cape Town and Knysna to the full. I reckon that you are in for the trip of a lifetime just by seeing how many days you have in Cape Town and Knysna. GREAT CHOICE of a week per place as you obviously will be pacing yourself well and not pushing things at a fast hard pace.

In answer to your questions.

The drive from the airport to the Cullinan is a straight road. Whoever you are hiring your car from will show you on a map how to arrive safely at the Cullinan however to make it even easier here is a detailed description of the ride:

Leave the airport taking the N2 that says Cape Town and Somerset West

Set odometer at the Cape Town/Somerset West sign

STAY IN RIGHT LANE
Take N2 to Cape Town

Cross over bridge and which veers to the right

Travel straight towards mountain and two cooling towers (NOT a nuclear powere station as all sem to think when they arrive in Cape Town.

Stay on N2 all the time

VERY IMPORTANT: Get into right hand lane and STAY THERE TILL INSTRUCTIONS CHANGE. DO NOT DEVIATE FROM THE RIGHT HAND LANE EVEN IF TRAFFIC PUSHES YOU.

11.1 Km Kirstenbosch turnoff - Ignore stay in right hand lane

11.9 Km N2 sign

12.2 Km City sign under the bridge staying N2/M3. Still stay in your right hand lane

13.4 Km Eastern Boulevard sign. Still stay in your right hand lane

13.8 Km Eastern Boulevard/Waterfront N2 sign. Still stay in your right hand lane. Once you see the sea move to center lane and don't deviate from it till these instructions say so

17.1 Km M6 Seepunt sign - Move to the left hand lane

18.6 Km The new Cape Town convention centre comes up on your left. Shortly after the convention centre you will see the Cullinan Hotel on your left

Move to left lane and take the left hand turn off at the pedestrian light that will encounter. Then drive straight to the visible hotel.

Banking
-------
You will have absolutely no problem at any ATM's with VISA and Masterdcards. Cirrus is accepted too however DINERS AND AMEX are frowned upon because of high charges that retail outlets face from the banks. Even though Diners and Amex can be used freely at ATM's be careful of using them in retail outlets.

Mosquitoes
----------
The are non existent in both Cape Town or Knysna and wont bother you anywhere during your stay.

Hope the above helps and that you have a grand time in our wonderful city and on the Garden Route.

Selwyn - you're a diamond! What brilliantly detailed directions. With your help, we should be there with no problem. Was just a little concerned as we're flying in overnight and so will have had little or no sleep before getting into the car...

Thanks v much. counting the days....!
