Question re: seat assignment on the flight to Israel

I booked a flight from San Francisco to Israel on Continental with 1 stop in Newark. While I have no problem with picking seats on the US legs, the system won't hold the US-Israel seat choice.

Is this something to worry about? Had this happened to you?

You might telephone Continental. I have found that some European airlines do not reserve seats in coach at all and seats are assigned only when you check in. It is possible also that special security procedures for flights to Israel modify what are the normal reserved seating procedures on Continental.

I finally called Continental and the answer was shocking!

They said when less then 20% seats left, the airport blocks seat assignment. I can pick a seat checking in on-line 24 hours before the flight or at the airport.

The shocking part is: 3 months before the flight it's nearly sold out, the flight to a country considered to be not safe to travel to!

WAY TO GO ISRAEL!!

I'm glad didn't really beleive that load of baloney the 800 agent gave me. Called later, and asked to talk to computer support as I have a problem with the Continental website. Got an assigned isle seat as requested.
