Question about footwear for the men

We will be in Samburu and the Mara in August. DH was wondering what type of footwear the men usually wear on safari. He'll already be wearing closed shoes for travel and time in the cities (Nairobi, Cairo). In the interest of packing light he was wondering what the other pair of shoes should be, sneakers, hiking boots, sandals, etc.? What do you experienced fodorites wear on safari in these areas.

Whatever you choose, be sure they're not new... should be broken in.

Sneakers are fine for everything, but

... oops,

but sandals are fine as are mocassins. With descent soles as accacia tree needles are sharp and can cut thru.

I would advise on wearing boots - up to the ankles.

I had an experience with a spider bite (not in Africa) which told me a lesson and since then I am wearing boots! That way I don't have to worry during walks etc.

If TAZ means Tsetse fly infested areas: BOOTS BOOTS BOOTS

I like to keep my feet covered, except when lounging around the lodge/camp. Then I'll wear flip flops, which take less room and are lighter than tevas or proper sandals.

Tennis shoes that I use for walking at home are what I'll be wearing for my vehicle based safari.

Not much longer!

No hiking, just vehicle based game drives, balloon safari, massai village visit, typical nairobi tours. I think I will be wearing walking type sneakers but DH wasn't sure whether it should be Tevas, sneakers, or hiking boots. I thought I had heard closed shoes due to tsetses, and it may be cold in August but wasn't sure. And then there's spiders like what happened to SV. I can't imagine but I have to hope that's rare.

I know it isn't long at all. I'm so excited! Time to start thinking about packing.

BTW, meant to add that I would love to do some hiking and or a walking safari but I don't think it will be an option at either Samburu Sopa or Mara Intrepids.
