Public Transportation in Cape Town

I've read mixed reviews on Cape Town's public transportation on other websites.

Do any Fodorites have their own experiences to share?

We wanted to take the commuter train that runs down the coast, to Simonstown, I believe. But we were talked out of it by locals who cited security issues. I have no idea how valid this concern would be.

We were in Cape Town in May, and had a great time. We also heard the concerns about public transportation, so we did not use it at all. However, we took many day trips with Rhino Africa. Their prices were very reasonable, and sometimes we were the only ones in the van, even though we paid for a group trip. They have a website-that is how we found them. I highly recommend them-they will take you anywhere you want to go, are very knowledgable and are great people.

Hi there

I live in Cape Town... hire yourself a car and go exploring... the roads and signage are excellent. Public transport and daytrips won't get you to the nicest spots :-)

If you are worried about prices look at 'funcars' they rent old classic volkswagen beetles... nothing quite like road tripping around the Cape in a beetle.

The train to Simonstown is perfectly fine - just be aware and don't travel after dark. Cape Town station can be a little in your face with loads of people and hawkers but stick to daylight and you will be fine JUST keep your eyes open and watch your stuff... Obviously don't walk around with your massive camera round your neck.

Highly recommend a walking tour of Cape Town - they go daily form Cape Town tourism and last about 3 hours.

Enjoy!

Cape Town is a delight! And the driving did look quite straightforward. You are in for a treat!

Enjoy!
