Hi Dana

It is great to read about someone from Virginia planning a trip to East Africa!

Unfortunaly I have no record of someone from Virginia trying to contact me since June 21? Can you please try again?

Thank, sandi! Do you know when Saruni-Samburu is expected to be up and running?

Dana,
There are many parts of Kenya where you're not likely to see many vehicles (and often the only other vehicles you may see are ones from your own camp). Laikipia, Meru, Shaba, parts of Chyulu Hills/Tsavo are all such places. OTOH, there's plenty to keep you busy for two weeks in Tanzania alone. If you want "out of the way" in Tanzania, you could consider incorporating the West Kilimanjaro area or southern Tanzania into your itinerary.

I believe Saruni-Samburu is looking at June 2008.. in time for next year's season, but TIA. One never knows.

Patty, Thx..as I know very little about the area, your suggestions are well taken. I will google a few areas and see what I come up with. I do appreiate everyone's input; its very overwhelming when we have never been, and don't know anyone who has, so that's what I love about this forum! D.

Dana, yes I know about IAD--I hung around there in my high school years (with an adult beverage or two) while they were building the dang airport--I was a northern VA gal many years ago! My question was, what city do you fly into and onward? USA-London, then NAI or Jburg? Or USA-Amsterdam? I'm trying to figure the most cost effective way for four of us to get to Kenya/Tanzania. What routes did you choose?

Hi. While I live in the Northeast, my parents live in VA. To get to Tanzania, we are meeting up in Boston and flying through Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro on Northwest Airlines/KLM. Good luck!

Moondoggie, sorry for the delay in responding; been away...no pc with me!!
We flew IAD - Joburg, spent the night, and on with our trip next day. So great that next June we are going to Tanzania (if I can get an itinerary up and running) and plan on IAD (Northwest air) to Amsterdam - spend 2 nights - then onto Tanzania (via KLM) - land either in Arusha or Dar. We've decided not to do Kenya - just Tanzania, so my arrival will not be Nairobi (not because of any problems - just a timing problem on our side )-a few less days than we thought we had 14 down to l0! So am thinking N.Crager, West. Serengeti and Selous would round out nicely. Anybody has suggestions, I am taking them all! Thx.D.

Thanks, Dana. We'll look into departures from IAD. My ultimate goal is to get us overseas (LON or AMS or elsewhere) and onward to NAI or Joburg on night flights--coming and going. We just hate flying long distance during the daytime. Anyone else done it this way? Don't even know if it's possible. (I'm watching the Americaa Cup on tv, so am looking into Emirates--glad they're sponsoring New Zealand!)

I'm also used to flying at night from the States, arriving NBO at night and right to sleep.

Recently though, flew Emirates leaving JFK 11:30am, arriving DXB 12/hrs later, with a 2.5/hr layover, then 4.5/hrs to NBO arriving 2:15pm. Was at my hotel in less than 1/hr.

I did fine with daytime travel, though forgot how taxing 12/hr flying East could be; the short leg to NBO had no effect on me.

When arriving anywhere during daylight hours, it's best to let the sunlight reset your body clock till it's dark when you can get a good night's sleep.

However, as I wasn't due to meet a friend till 7pm, had time for a short nap, after which I was good to go. Better the nap then my head falling into the plate during dinner

Where's the best place to see the wildebeest migration in July? I'm trying to decide whether I should go to Kenya or Tanzania.

Suggest if planning your own trip you start a new thread with all your details and your own "heading/title" You can then receive responses and then reply. This also allows you to add as you progress, and for those with input to provide continued responses. Adding onto Dana's thread will loose your inquiry.
