planning for Morocco in fall

Hi... I'm planning a 2-week trip to Morocco and this will be my first time to this mystical place. I've read the Fodor's guide and have friends who've been, but am looking for any guidance from travellers who are experience junkies-- not resort-hounds-- to help me plan my trip. Is Moroccan Arabic a plus? Worth studying? Where outside of the cities is worthwhile? Would you plan your trip around one of the festivals (Ramadan excepted)? Any help much appreciated.

hi, we recently returned from 10 days in morocco _ marrakech, essouira, and a three-day trip to the dades and toudre gorges and erfoud//merzouga in the sahara. i would recommend all of it except essouira, which was a bit too, i don't know, precious and touristy.
i wish we'd gone north, to fez, as well. and i wish we'd stayed longer in the gorges and the sahara _ the best part of the trip.

Arabic would be useful but if you speak good french you would not need it; virtually all moroccans we encountered spoke french. (many also spoke Berber and a surprisingly large number, English.) You may encounter people who will tell you there is a lot of hassling in Morocco but i didn't really find it that bad; the people were genuinely friendly and outgoing and had a lovely warm sense of humor. have a great trip!
