Planning a trip to Kruger....do we HAVE to see Cape Town? Everyone seems to think so...except me.

Hi I have been away for some time and now find the thread again. Don't know where you are with your project, but still ... perhaps I'll add more confusion BUT. I recognize many of your hesititations we had the same. We have been to SA now 2 times and return this year, you'll get the bug, no doubt.
What we did to get just a bit over the long trip, is stay 2 nights in the Tzaneen area just to relax is an absolute stunning surrounding (you could also do one night) You are then very close to the game lodges. We stayed in King's Walden Lodge , a sort of luxury guest house with colonial atmosphere an the must spectacular views - no animals here but nice to visit the srroundings with tea plantations etc, but this was only to 'prepare' for the gamedrives, so as not to start the morning after arrival. They have a site, then we did one lodge Timbavati/Kruger, a tented lodge (Tanda Tula -just great!)with big breeding herds of elephants and a very interesting elephant research center- fantastic- and then on to Simbambili with spectacular game and leopards. I would certainly NOT stay 4 nights in Cape Town. If you do go to capetown think of the Constantia UItsig Hotel - not cheap, although they have packages , (combined with their game lodge )the ideal location to visit everything that Capetown has to offer!

Ivee,
thanks for your post. Everyone has been very helpful.
We are still in the planning stages of our trip and have now come up with the idea of going to Kenya area instead of Kruger.
One of our travel buddies talked to an "Africa Specialist" who said "you dont' get a "real Africa" experience when you go to Kruger as its a "game reserve". I asked him what she said the difference was as there no fences...the animals roam freely. Right?
It sounds like another agent who has an agenda to me.
She's mailing him brochures.

The only one who can tell you the feeling of a real Africa experience is yourself. The best way is to go, to SA, Kenya, Botswana, make your experiences and then compare ! no matter where you go first !
