Planning a trip

We have about 15 days in SA, following a conference in Durban. The "musts" on our list are Victoria Falls, Cape Town, and a Kruger game park safari. This is our first time in SA, although we are world travelers, and I want to know if there are any other "must see" sights or places. Cost is not the primary concern. Has anyone been to Shakaland? It seems a bit like a Zulu Disneyland (which I loathe). Thanks.

I haven't been to these places yet (we go in June), but I did alot of research and we decided to stay at a safari camp in Sabi Sands rather than in Kruger. According to several guide books we got, the game viewing is phenomenal there and we liked the idea of the open vehicles and night drives which are not always possible in the National Parks. Also, we made sure to include a drive through the panorama region (Blyde River Canyon, etc.) near Kruger. Sounds fascinating. Any interest in shark cage diving? There is a day trip from Cape Town that takes you out to the coast and you go to an area where the great white sharks come through and you get in a cage to see them "up close and person". I can send you the information our travel agent sent us if you are interested.

Hi there

Your trip that you are suggesting is a very typical trip that most people undertake and there is so much more to see and do. You speak of Shakaland, however this is in Kwazulu Natal which is not on your list, I do however think that it is over commercialised, there is a far nicer one called Kwabekitunga which is not commercialised and is really great. The other option is that you do a safari and then perhaps spend a night or two in the area at a guest house like Cybele and go to the cultural village in that area. There is so much, if you woould like to let me know your interests I could tell you some wonderful ideas!
