Pietermaritzburg

My wife and I will be spending 3 months in Piertermaritzburg South Africa and we are looking for suggestions that will help us be a part of the community rather than being seen as a tourist. Suggestions will be greatly appeicated. Thanks

How wonderful for you! Will you be at the University?

I've only been to Pertermaritzburg as a guest (my husband gave a talk at the U. there once). We found it a charming university town, with interesting history and pretty architecture.

I don't know that I have any suggestions for you. If you're living there, you'll soon feel a part of the community; South African people are very hospitable.

Rent a 4x4 and join the local 4x4 clubs. You will have more friends then you can count. If you have other interests, there are probably organizations for those too. I hope you aren't a vegetarian or on the wagon.

One other thing, talk as little as possible about America or make comparisons. Let them initiate the questions regarding that and make it short. Yanks can be annoying otherwise.
