I looked at your beautiful photographs...am going in the fall for a few days but considering going on a olonger trip with 8 females (mothers & daughters) in spring...do you think this country offers a varied itinerary to keep it fun and interesting and exotic...we just went to Morocco, camped on the desert, among going to the big cities, etc...it was fabulous...how were the beaches? can one combine petra, desert and some beach? is spring a good time to go?

Yes, Jordan has plenty to offer, and your trip can be very diverse. There are archeological sites, sources of hot water, places of religious importance, cities with great markets, desert (especially Wadi Rum, one of the most beautiful desert), Aqaba with beach, with FABULOUS diving and snorkling, the impessive Dead Sea, and (last but not least) Petra of course is a category in itself. One of the most beautiful site I've seen.
Spring is the best time to go, as summer are extremely hot.

Spring is a great time to go to Jordan. I've been to Jordan several times (my in laws live there). Definetly go to Petra and Aqaba... they are beautiful. Other day trips to include are: the Roman ruins of Jerash, the hot springs of Hamamat Maeen. Also, don't forget to do some shopping in Amman.

Agreed that shopping in Amman may not be very fruitful. Beirut next door is way better.

Thanks for sharing your site which brought back memories of Jordan from our own visit a few years ago.

I enjoyed the passages of text with each image though many may find them difficult as most (except the first one) are in French. Luckily French was my main subject at university so I was able to follow!

It seems that you had a fairly fluid trip in that you hadn't pre-arranged your itinerary and were therefore able to befriend local bedouin guides and employ them to take you around and to other destinations, such as Wadi Rum.

How much of your itinerary and accommodation did you plan in advance and how did you find the right local guides/ operators to use for the bits that were not planned in advance?

Actually, nothing was planned in advance. Total improvisation. We took a bus from Amman to Petra. We chose the hotel the closest from the Petra's site entrance. Spent two full days in Petra. We had luck to meet some bedouins on our way out of the site, who proposed us to bring us to the heart of Wadi Rum in a bedouin tent. Price was very reasonable, so we went for it. Then decided to go to Aqaba, once again, choosing where to stay randomly. Same for dead sea, etc. Jordan is a very straighforward country to visit. They're used to cater for visitors, transportation is easy and good range of accomodation is on offer.

It's not a problem for me as I speak French but I thought I'd let you know as a lot of your other visitors probably do not!

We went on a tour as we were meant to be travelling with my parents (who had to pull out). The only saving grace is that, because it was very obvious that the US would shortly invade Iraq, most of the other passengers had cancelled and there were only 11 of us in the group instead of 40 or more. I am not so keen on group travel so this was a real relief. The other good thing (for us, not for the warm and friendly Jordanians) was that Petra was almost empty and we were priviledged to share it with so few other people.

October is great time to go.
Enjoy your trip there. Jordan is a really stunning country. Certainly my favourite in the Middle East.

I know this post is a little old but if you read it please respond. I would like to go to Egypt and Jordan combining both with about 10 days in Egypt and 4 days in Jordan. Would this be enough just to see the major sites of Petra and Wadi Rum? In Egypt we'll be checking out Sharm and Hurghada so we only want to see Petra and Wadi in Jordan. What kind of itinerary and major sites do you recommend for 4 days there? Thanks

Sorry - reread your posting and reading between the lines it sounds like you plan on hitting Egypt and INCLUDING Sharm/Hurghada - thus the 10 days. Misinterpreted it at first!

eurosurfergirl, if you have 4 full days in Jordan, I'd recommend you stick to Petra and Wadi Rum, the two major sites in Jordan.
Allow two full days for Petra. THen head to Wadi Rum, also 2 days. Try not to stay at the camp at the entrance but going in the heart of the desert, with Bedouins. A great experience.
If your 4 days include also transport from/to Jordan, I'd suggest to take out one day from your trip in Egypt.
