Phone cards to call home are they practical & where to buy them?

Our nephew will be wanting to call home while we are in Kenya ln safari. In all our past trips our family has used phone cards bought in the country to call home. We have a Mobal phone but the phone card seemed easier. As we will be on safari in Samburu, Lake Nakuru and the Mara for the entire trip, can a phone card be purchased, say at the Nairobi airport, and then be used?

I think you'll find it more convenient to use a cell phone rather than landline. You can buy SIM cards at the airport.

Yes you can. I recommend Pingo.com phone cards that can be bought online. You don't actually have to carry the real card. Or you can use their softphone in any Internet ready computer. Another is to download Pingo's EZ Dial smartphone application to your mobile phone and use it every time you call. The rates both the softphone and EZ Dial are the same as the phone cards.

Please note there is great cell phone coverage in Kenya (Massai Mara, Samburu) and little landlines outside cities/villages.

I would rather go for the sim card. Make sure you phone is unlocked.

Happy travels!

This site may be of interest http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml
It also mentions who the providors partner with, makes selecting a sim card easier.
