Petra, Jordan travel safety

I'm a u.s. citizen living in London planning to go to Petra, Jordan for a week in november. Has anyone recently returned from Jordan or can anyone who lives there please comment on safety for americans? I was just in Egypt a few months ago and found no problems at all, so I'm most likely going to go, but thought I'd check here anyway. Thanks!

I don't have any advice but we are also going to Jordan for 5 days and Egypt for 14 days in Dec. I am glad to hear you had no problems in Egypt!! This is our first trip out of the country so we are apprehensive for a variety of reasons but do not plan to cancel until the tour company recommends no travel. So far, the State Dept. has not posted any travel warnings. Hope you have a great time!

Right now Egypt and Jordan are quite a bit safer than, say, the DC area.

If you are an egyptian, or a muslim perhaps.

If you are a westerner you had better keep your head on a swivel. Islamic terrorists are stepping up their attacks on westerners - look at the recent massacre of hundreds of western tourists in Bali.

Just keep in mind that if President Bush cannot keep it in his pants that a war with Iraq may lead to Iraq attacking Israel like last time. Last time I checked my map for the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon that I would like to run next April, Jordan was located right between Iraq and Israel. Wouldn't feel too comfortable running 50 Kilometers while Scud Missiles and American Bombers and Fighter Jets were flying overhead.
If for no other selfish reason that it will screw up my vacation schedule, I am praying for peace. If all goes well, I will spend about six nights in Amman, Jordan in Dead Sea area, also visiting Petra, and four nights in Paris.
