Paying for Internal Flights and Accommodation

I'm planning a trip in March and was wondering if I could get a better tariff for flights and accommodation if a friend based in Cape Town paid for stuff rather than me booking on the internet and paying by credit card. Any tips appreciated. Are there any companies you'd recommend to help me put together an itinerary?

You will definitely get a better deal on internal flights if they are booked in SA (flights are always cheaper if booked in the country of departure).

In terms of accommodation, it depends. Some safari lodges, for instance, have special rates for South Africans -- but you need to prove you are a South African when you check in, so unless your friend is travelling with you, you wouldn't qualify.

You don't really need a travel agent for South Africa. Almost everything can be booked independently, and you'll save a lot of money as well. There are a lot of SA travel veterans here on Fodors who are happy to give feedback on itineraries or make suggestions.

As a starting point -- How long do you plan to go for? What is your budget? Which areas do you want to see (Cape, Kruger area, Garden Route, etc)? Do you have any particular interests (shark diving, wine-tasting, etc)?

If you purchase your internal air with the international air you will get a very sweet deal, way better than buying a ticket domestically.

If you are an international it is unlikely that you will get special deals if you were to buy a lodge or hotel room through your friend. They check passports.

Occassionall you can slip through the crack by buying a domestic "tactical" special offer, but if you are planning on visiting one of the premier properties on this basis, be warned, you might find that the property is sold out, but that will be the chance you take.

Where are you based and what company are you looking for? Tour operator, travel agnet, reservations desk etc.
