Paying for a safari

Is it common to pay 30% of a safari up front by a wire transfer/cash and not through a credit card. I feel a little worried wiring money to Tanzania.

My experience it is normal.... many companies in Africa are not merchants for Credit Cards as the credit card companies charge such high fees.

Operators need a deposit so they can secure accommodation bookings etc. If you ask, they may accept final installment on arrival.

Check that the company is a fully registered operator.

Also beware that sometimes there is an third bank involved in the transfer that takes a fee as well.

Make sure you bank is able to track the transfer right to receipt of receivers bank. Their bank will not be able to track it till it hits their account.

Hope this helps

Very normal when dealing with in-country outfitters. Few accept credit cards. To-date we haven't seen any postings of travelers having problems when doing so.
