Painted Dogs in the Mara

Yup, they've been sighted in the Aitong area. Small pack, but who knows how many more will show up.

Seems these dogs are making appearances in many areas of East Africa - Laikipia, Samburu... now the Mara. Also in Tarangire and the Selous.

Happy New Year to them! May they flourish and multiply. Thanks for the good news.

Thanks for the news Sandi and don't forget Ruaha..... Selous is meant to have one third of the world's wild dog population (around 1300 dogs), from what I've read. I don't know if this figure still stands.

aby Dec 12th, 2006 10:41 AM

Yep Africa
The figure you quote (1300) for Selous is an estimate @ L.P. "Watching Wildlife - East Africa" from 2001

Does anyone have a more up-to-date survey / count ?

Divewop
Good Luck!
The problem is that they probably tend to avoid areas with a high concentration of large carnivores.
& these are the areas you are probably gonna visit...

Sandi
Samburu has had short sightings almost every year or two - once in a while they happen to visit a remote corner of their huge home-range called 'Samburu Reserve' ...
Mara
a friend who stayed & guided in the Mara 1996-2002 says nobody has seen them during those years
only god knows if there will be another disappearance of a few years, or maybe they will den again in mara, just like in the old days...

the "small pack" happen to be three !...
too little to ensure survival unless somewhere there's a den with some "helpers" ...

One of the guides from Saruni Camp, spotted the three dogs, 2 male and 1 female, while out on a game drive with guests. He hadn't seen dogs in the area since 1984. One of the guests was fortunate to get photos of them as they played around the vehicle. One of the other guides at Saruni, has on occasion in the past few years seen a few dogs, but gone too soon. Only time will tell if there are little ones around or due.

Aby, the only copyright I have is for the pack of 7 in Samburu, June 2005. :-D
According to Pippa on Bushdrums, the very small Aitong pack has been sighted regularly since mid-November.

Wild dogs do badly when pack size is 6 or less.

tuckeg Dec 13th, 2006 05:00 PM

Just after we left Klein's Camp in late October a pack moved into a den near the Maasai village and has been raising pups there. Bad timing on our part.
