Packing
 

We are going to Tanzania the end of Jan 2012. On the way back to the US were are spending 2 nights in Amsterdam. Any tips on packing for two different climates when luggage space is so limited.

I did the same stopover on the way home after my safari.

I went August - September.

Just bring a light sweater and jacket and you will be fine.

And a pair of those small black wool gloves that you can buy at Wal*Mart for about a dollar.

A light jacket will come in handy in Tanzania, even in January. Maybe you could layer a fleece pullover under that in Amsterdam. The fleece shouldn't be too bulky or heavy. Are you starting and ending your safari in Arusha? If so, perhaps your outfitter could store a small bag in which you have heavier clothing for Amsterdam.

We stopped in AMS on way to Kenya/Tanzania/Seychelles in end-Nov into Dec.

AMS was cold and raw, Africa was lovely, Seychelles hot/humid. Three distinctly different environments.

Knowing we'd be back in NYC in Dec when it's usually cooler to cold, traveled with a fleece lined anorak, a thermal-t and one (1) only heavy sweater... all worn on the flight to and while in AMS. This was more than enough for 2/days in AMS. AMS will be cold in Jan.

Once in Kenya/Tanzania, the anorak worked fine for cold mornings/nights... that was it. It was never put on other than those hours and certainly not needed in SEZ and on return to NYC they were having a heat-wave where the temps were in the 80s.

So layers, layers, layers.

peel off when I get to africa

also several pair of Gortex socks to change

nothing seems to dry...

We did the same stopover. Took silk tee and silk leggings to layer under other clothes. They take up NO space and are extremely warm. Should be able to buy at Lands End or LL Bean. Lightweight fleece under a raincoat, light gloves, warm socks, a neck scarf, along with an ear warming hat will do the trick. You could use one of the fleece ear arming headbands. Then just layer, layer, layer.

Last year there was a blizzard most ofEurope in December and it was cold. I'm fairly sure there is a left luggage at AMS between Terminals 1 & 2.

We are spending one night in AMS on our way to Tanzania, and 3 on our way home. We plan to leave a bag with our cold weather gear at the hotel and travel lighter to Tanzania

We are also going to Tanzania over Christmas with stopovers in London. In fact, 2 nights London going, 1 night return. Bringing Patagonia Alpine jacket. Very warm, very light. Squiches up into pocket so takes up very little room.
