Why not use the local currency?

Guenmai Aug 18th, 2008 09:44 AM

I only used the local money. Happy Travels!

The reason I was asking was that we are going on a tour from acruise ship and wil only be there several hours...Oh yes.. we do not have an ATM card

julia1 Aug 18th, 2008 06:30 PM

I used only dirhams and don't remember seeing anyone using any other currency. There are plenty of banks available where you can change money. Or, why not get an ATM card? The exchange rate is so much more favorable.

We just used our ATM to get dirhams, but I do remember seeing some prices in tourist shops in euros (and not dollars), so if the choice is one or the other I'd go euro.

P_M Aug 20th, 2008 02:52 PM

I would say €'s are a better bet but you might be able to use USD also. But in either case you will not get a good exchange rate for using a foreign currency so it would be wise to get dirhams.

I am usually the big cheerleader for using the ATM instead of a bank or exchange facility. But in Morocco the exchange is regulated by the government so it doesn't matter where you exchange. That was the case in early 2004 when I visited, I don't know if that's changed or not.

I had no idea that cruise ships made calls in the port of Marrakesh.

Port of Marrakech!

the_moroccan Aug 23rd, 2008 12:29 AM

Port of Marrakech? I hope you didn't think Marrakech was a coastal city! lol...The only ports in Morocco where cruise ships make stops is Tangiers, Casablanca and Agadir.

DonTopaz Aug 23rd, 2008 01:27 AM

I have been to Marrakech --drove there from Tangiers via Rabat/Casa, then took the train to Oujda/Oran/Algiers, so am pretty much aware of the geography. OP mentioned that she was going on a tour from a cruise ship' hence the 'port of Marrakech' comment.
