Airfare within SA -- does it fluctuate much?
What is the cheapest way to book the internal flights (ie. JNB-CPT or PE)? I presume I need to purchase it before I get to SA? Do you need to do it far in advance? Do those prices fluctuate a lot or remain fairly stable? Which airlines would you recommend I check?

Hello,
Book through Kulula.com a few months in advance, and you'll get the cheapest possible fare. Because Kulula is a budget airline, the cheapest fares go first. The prices do tend to fluctuate over time, but primarily in an upward direction.
I paid R299 for CPT-JNB and another R299 for JNB-MQP (Sabi Sands).
It's always wise to check with the other airlines for sales (Nationwide and SAA) but Kulula is almost always the cheapest if you book far enough in advance. Kulula will also take non-SA credit cards online, which many of the others won't.

Wow -- that is cheap! I just checked CPT-JNB for a random date in March and got R444. Which looked pretty inexpensive till I re-read your posting

I just booked JNB to Durban for next July and paid ZAR 800 for the roundtrip, but prices escalate and I secured a webfare on the SAA website. I figured even if I need to change my tix, I could throw those away since the cost is likely less than the change penalty and it was worth locking them in for around US$120 or so.

Kulula is cheap but don't get burned like me. I bought my tickets months in advance from JNB to KMIA. They cancelled the flight and didn't even bother to tell me. I found out when I was trying to confirm flight times. I just had to buy alternative last minute tickets on SAA and am still struggling to get a refund from Kulula.

Since the beginning of last year there has been a second "budget" carrier, 1time.
