Ultrathon is excellent. (The base protects the skin from absorbing the chemicals, and makes it much longer lasting.) It is also available at REI.

If you need some on safari (not sure where you are going) in southern Africa, you can probably find Peaceful Sleep. It works quite well, smells better, but doesn't last as long as the ultrathon. The stick form of Peaceful Sleep is very useful; you can apply only where needed without getting it all over your hands.

The active in both of these (DEET) will pretty much dissolve plastic, so be careful about getting it on fingers and then touching other stuff.

I go with a spray bottle of any brand containing 50% DEET.

I also take some of the non-DEET citronella stuff for the sensitive areas as DEET is TOXIC stuff!

Any brand that's at least 25% DEET and UNSCENTED works for me. Unscented isn't always easy to find but worth looking for IMO -- some of the scented mosquito stuff out there smells awful to me.
