One Day in Cairo with a Teen
 

Hi All,
The three of us, my husband and I, and teenage boy will be passing through Cairo in August. And yes, I gather it will be very hot. We will spend one night at the Cairo Sheraton (arriving after midnight) and we have the next day to explore Cairo before departing on a flight that leaves at 10:45pm. We will have a guide all day to shuttle us around and get us to the airport in the evening. My husband is the only one that has been before but that was over 20 years ago. We definitely would like to see the Pyramids. Can anyone recommend a suitable itinerary, places to eat, experiences not to miss in this short time we have?

nadia25 - it sounds to me like they already have a guide set up.
But, if they will take you to Giza in the morning, then if it is time for lunch before you leave the Giza area, go to Andrea's for lunch. The BEST BBQ Chicken in Egypt I think. YUM! Along with other wonderful Egyptian treats. I think they have the best Samboosak (sp?) by far, so get one order of that to share.
Then come back into town for the Citadel and the Museum, as Nadia suggests. If you have time, go to the Khan el Khalili to buy some souvenirs.

Thanks for the advice. Starting with the Pyramids sounds like a good idea especially in August. The museum would probably be nice respite from the heat in the afternoon. We'll keep Andrea's in mind and I really like the idea of the Khan el Khalili for souvenirs.

We were in Egypt in August 2008. I'm assuming the new museum is not open yet. If I'm right that this is still the old building, then know that it's not air-conditioned and it's pretty stifling hot inside. The only thing you can say is that when inside you'll be out of the sun. FWIW, the King Tut room, is air-conditioned.

From what I can see, they are still moving dirt around at the new museum site. Don't hold your breath for it's opening any time soon.

What sf7307 says is right. The museum will still be warm, but it will be out of the sun. A hand held fan is a good idea, or a battery operated fan of sorts that you can carry may save your life. :)
