Okavango Charter flight packing
 

Our air itinerary shows we are traveling from Chobe Kasane to Baines Camp, Vumbura Plains and Maun on Okavando Charter and from Maun to Jo'berg on Air Botswana. We are a group of 6. Travel agent says 30 pounds of luggage for each. Does this sound right? I'm trying to plan how to pack and store in Jo'berg because we will have city and golf clothes with us on this month long trip. Many people have mentioned soft sided duffel bags from LL Bean. They look so big! Wheels or no wheels? Thanks for any advise. I know we don't need much at the camps.

Since you will are 6 people, you will <i>most likely</i> not be going on the smallest planes, for which weight is crucial. Our limit was 44 lb/pp on our 3 Botswana flights.

If the bags which you saw are 'big', they probably are. We got 27&quot; Eddie Bauer soft bags with wheels at Target. Cost $45 each. They were fine.

Most of the time, you'll be flying on Cessna 206s (6-seater.) Your luggage goes into a &quot;pod&quot; underneath the plane. The opening through which your bag goes is 9.5&quot; by 27&quot;. It has to be able to fit through that opening. You don't need a lot of clothes, as they do laundry at all the camps. 30 lbs is a lot of luggage. As for wheels or no wheels, most wheeled luggage is heavier than non-wheeled luggage. I prefer the Rick Steves non-wheeled bag. It's a little over 3 lbs when empty.

While a wheeled bag is easier for you as the traveler through airports, etc, once in Africa you'll never have to lift your bag. Besides, with the small opening for luggage, the bags get squished into the minimal space. Wheels and handles can break.

At Int'l airports, there are luggage carts, so a soft-sided duffle works best. Believe me, 30/lbs affords you lots of clothing.

With laundry available at camps, no need to bring much of anything, except &quot;wears&quot; especially women's which usually aren't laundered. If anyone in the group wishes to rinse out their own... go for it, or bring sufficient for the entire trip.
