OK, I think I can squeeze in Africa trip in December

Having not been on a traditional safari since August 2003 (not counting Madagascar in May 2005), and not planning safari (Hluhluwe and Kgalagadi in July 2006), I'm thinking about a visit to Tunisia in December. We would visit for several days, with a stopover in Rome on each end.

I don't think I've seen much, if any, info on Tunisia, but we are considering staying several days in Tunis, with day trips from Tunis to see some of the country. This way we won't need to pack and unpack, although it will require a bit of traveling, but some of it will be by train, which I don't mind.

Does anyone have any recommendations (currently considering visiting Tunis, Dougga, Sousse and El Jem). Also, any recommendation for hotel in Tunis -- interesting in local, non-chain (ie, Sheraton or Hilton) hotel with local flavor and history.

Thanks, Michael

Not really any useful info but just an exhortation to watch your diet carefully - when I worked for a tour operator Tunisia was one of the destinations (along with Egypt and Dominican Republic) that produced the highest number of food poisoning related complaints, even at classy "5 star" resorts.

Thanks, I survived Egypt and DR, so hopefully I'll be safe. Only real bad food poisoning was in Tanzania (but I think I contracted it in Kenya) and India.
