NWA/KLM carry on
I am of the opinion that there are two types of airline luggage, carry on and lost. This appears to be especially true for flights USA to Kilimanjaro via Amsterdam.
The website info is confusing to me. Has anyone carried on 1 piece 22" luggage, 1 small backpack, and 1 camera bag? Does this meet their requirements? Any recommendations? Do I have to carry the camera out of a case? They state that a camera could be carried on as an accessory in addition to the carry-ons. Help! Dugi |
I am of the opinion that there are two types of airline luggage, carry on and lost. This appears to be especially true for flights USA to Kilimanjaro via Amsterdam.
People we've flown with on five flights on this route (we were on Continental, others on NWA and others) had only two problems with delayed luggage at Kili. Both times it was because their US flights were delayed and the connection at AMS was too tight for their bags to make it. Both times the bags caught up with them a couple days later (once at Tarangire, once at Manyara). So it's not as grim as you make it out to be. Most people don't have a problem ... we never have (yet, on this route) ... though I did spend two smelly days in Paris last summer wearing the same socks and underwear when our bags didn't make it thru Newark during a weather delay, so now I always pack two extra pairs of sox and underwear in the camera bag :). Has anyone carried on 1 piece 22" luggage, 1 small backpack, and 1 camera bag? Does this meet their requirements? No. You get one normal carry-on (your 22" luggage) and one 'personal item' like a purse or laptop bag .. so you couldn't do all three of these and you might not be able to count the 'camera bag' as a 'personal item' if it's full-sized. We take big camera bags plus a laptop bag and never had a problem, though we are definitely over-weight and once they had a scale out weighing selected carry-on bags, so we sweated this but weren't chosen. So cut down one of the carry-ons or check in the 22" bag. Bill |
Just to clarify a bit, you can carry a camera by the strap around your neck and it doesn't count as a separate 'personal item' but you cannot take three things like you mentioned.
Actually you can wear a photo vest with many pockets and jam a couple of lenses and even a body or two in the pockets and that doesn't count against your allowance either ... you will look like a dork (I used to do this on trips to Alaska in the film daze and my wife was ashamed to walk beside me) but you can fit a lot of gear in ... dunno if I'd want to do this for flights as long as Africa (we are in the air 25 hours total each way) but it's a loop-hole in the airline's rules. |
I agree about only doing carryon.
However, you can only carry on one piece of luggage (to go in the overhead bin) and one "personal item" (like a camera bag or backpack, to go under the seat in front of you). Make sure your carryong luggage meets their dimensions -- check the NW/KLM website. I think it can't be more than 45 inches total or maybe even less (length plus width plus depth). |
Thanks Bill and Lisa.
This is the type of verification that I needed. I want to go all carry on because of my flight schedule. Los Angeles to Memphis 44 min connect time Memphis to Amsterdam 23 hour connect time Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro This looks like a lost luggage nightmare possibility to me. From NWA site: Carry-on Allowance Northwest allows you to carry one piece of luggage on board the aircraft plus a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small backpack. The carry-on luggage must be of a size and shape to allow for storage in overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of you. Dimensions:Cannot exceed 45 linear inches (9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches) Personal Items In addition to your carry-on bag, customers may carry on a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small backpack. Dimensions of the additional item must not exceed 15"x11"x6". At least one carry-on item should go beneath the seat in front of you. Additional Items that may be brought on board and do not count towards your allowance: · Overcoat or wrap · Fully collapsible umbrella-style stroller* · Camera and/or pair of binoculars · Cane · Umbrella · Medical assistive devices · Two-wheeled baggage cart · Infant diaper bags · Child Car Seats* · Collapsible wheelchair · Reasonable amount of reading material for the flight · Pair of braces or other prosthetic device (provided you are dependent upon the device) *For international travel, these items will count towards the free carry on allowance. From KLM site: Hand baggage( Carry on) allowance Economy Class1 piece of L55 x W25 x H35 cm * The total weight - including accessories - may not exceed 12 kg Accessories: Briefcase, Camera, Walking stick, Umbrella, Small laptop *Total dimensions may not exceed 115cm, wheels and handles included So given this and your replies leads me to do without the camera bag. Carry my camera and additional lens around my neck and stuff my travel vest (5 zippered pockets-2 of which are 12"x6", 2 inside pockets)with stuff, look like a dork and embarrass Bill's wife. Both my luggage and backpack meet NWA specs. I hope its OK with KLM. Thanks again Gary |
... and KLM has those carry-on bag sizers with a scale beneath. So watch the weight!
Though a short connect time in Memphis, it's a small airport and I've made a checked bag connect in less than 20/min. |
... and KLM has those carry-on bag sizers with a scale beneath. So watch the weight!
Yes, they have a weight limit on KLM, I think it's 10 kilos (22 lbs) but check for the right # on their site ... USUALLY they don't weigh the carry-ons but one flight (out of five) from AMS to Kili they hauled out the scale and were dragging selected folks out of line just past the security screening machine. I knew if I or my wife had our carry-on weighed we were screwed since my laptop bag was 19 lbs and my camera bag was 34 lbs, so I got behind a lady with two big carry-on bags, they yanked her out of line to weigh her bags (both were too heavy) and we slipped on by ... at Kili someone we were traveling with had his carry-on weighed and he was forced to put some expensive camera gear in his checked bags to get the carry-on weight down to par. Despite the weight our camera bags look compact and small and the guy at Kili just slaps a 'carry-on approved' sticker on them every time without weighing, so looking slim will lower the chances you'll get singled out and have your bag weighed. Just one more hassle to worry about ... Bill |

KLM carry on limit is 12 kg (26.4 lb). Dugi |

KLM definately has got a problem at shipol. some friends who travel all the time via AMS very seldom get their luggage where they are flying to. certainly you won't be allowed to carry a camera backpack plus another backpack plus smaller handbag on to the aircraft. be prepared to check in one backpack/luggage - take vauelables out. put some underwear, extra t-shirt/shirt and tiny toiletries into your carry on and hope for delivery at final destination. div |
