November Safari in the Mara

Just wondering if the migration is still happening during the begining of November, we are heading for a 10 day trip then ending in Zanzibar (any help with a place to stay in Zanzibar would be great as well)

Some of the herds have been known to hang around into and thru November, even early December. But that will vary from year-to-year. Usually, by November, the majority of the herds will have commenced their trek back across the border into Tanzania.

But, there are resident wildie herds that never migration (in both the Mara and Serengeti), and there is plenty of other game in the Mara.

Until more recent years, I usually travelled late November into December and always found the Mara worthy of a visit for at minimum 3-days.

Where else will you be visiting on your trip? Why not post your itinerary, which parks/reserves, number of days at each, accommodations. It's nice to see the full picture.

Hi here is the Iterinary of the trip

Day 1 Depart Nairobi (L,D)
We depart Nairobi and are off to the farmlands of the Kikuyu people near Mount Kenya.

Day 2-3 Samburu Game Reserve (2B,2L,2D)
Arrive at Samburu Game Reserve for lunch, before heading out for wildlife spotting, including many species rarely found elsewhere.

Day 4 Lake Nakuru (B,L,D)
Descend into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru. The lake is a shallow soda lake, renowned for its huge concentration of flamingoes!

Day 5-6 Masai Mara (2B,2L,2D)
After breakfast on Day 5, we depart for the world famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. With its vast open plains and distinctive flat-topped acacia trees, no visit to Kenya would be complete without a visit here! With fantastic game viewing en route, we will arrive at Masai Mara in the late afternoon and set up camp. Day 6 will be a full day of game viewing with excellent chances of seeing the "Big 5" - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino.

Day 7 Nairobi (B,L)
Enjoy one last morning game drive, then depart for the journey back to Nairobi.

Day 8 Zanzibar (B)
After breakfast we transfer to the airport for our flight to Zanzibar. In the early afternoon, feel free to venture into town for a tour of the old Stone Town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town is a captivating labyrinth of narrow streets and winding alleyways. Lose yourself in the buzz of the markets, delight your senses in the bustling bazaars, and check out the many mosques and grand Arab residences.

Day 9 Day at Leisure (B)
The day is yours! Relax or explore at your own leisure, then enjoy the culture and nightlife that Stone Town has to offer.

Day 10 Spice Plantation (B)
A visit to Zanzibar would not be complete without a visit to a local spice plantation. These spice plantations brought the beginnings of Zanzibar's infamous slave trade.

Day 11 Day at Leisure (B)
Relax on the white sand beach, soak up the sunshine, snorkel or scuba dive in the crystal clear waters. The day is yours! You might want to venture out for an early evening boat ride.

Day 12 Depart Zanzibar (B)
You will be met at your hotel and transferred to the airport (or ferry) for your departure flight (flight not included).

Is this a group tour? And where are you staying (accommodations) at the various parks and on Zanzibar. Where else on Zanzibar are you staying other than in Stone Town?

Can you make any changes to the itinerary? Reason? On Day 5, driving to the Mara is easily a 5-6/hr drive, leaving you with only 1-1/2 days in this reserve which deserves more time. Likewise, from the Mara to Nairobi is a 5-6/hr drive on lousy roads (both directions).

On Day 12, where is the ferry supposed to be taking you? DAR? Is that where you will be departing even with your 8-day extension on ZNZ? Or from Nairobi?

Are you spending the night somewhere around Mt Kenya on Day 1? Day 4 from Samburu to Nakuru is also a very long drive, possibly longer than the Nakuru-Mara, Mara-Nairobi drives.

Do you mean you have an additional 8 days in Zanzibar after the 4 days included in the itinerary above?

Hey Sandi

Yes its a organized group tour, we are camping, out there I believe, we dont leave on the day indicated we are staying an additional 8 days in Zanzibar, it looks so awesome we thought we should stay there a bit longer, we have no clue where to stay there yet, maybe will figure that out when we get there. I dont think there is any flexiblity with the tour it self, wish we had more time with the safari, I plan to bring alot of photo gear and make the best of the little time we have there.
