Northern Tsavo

Do any of you Fodorites know of any lodge or tented camp in northern Tsavo? I am interested in hiring a car and driver and going north to Ithumba to see some of my favorite elephants. Thought perhaps we could drive up from Satao Camp, stay over one night and then return to Satao. However, I can't find any listing of a place near Ithumba.

Would greatly appreciate any knowledge you might have of a lodge or tented camp in that area.

Hi Jan! I pulled out my Lonely Planet Kenya guidebook and it looks like there are a couple well northwest of Satao. I can't vouch for what they are like, but here goes: Tiva River Camp (alongside the river of the same name) not too far from the Tsavo East Park Headquarters, and in the Yatta Plateau there is the Tsavo Safari Camp. According to Nolting's book, he ranks Tsavo Safari Camp class D and no mention of Tiva River Camp. Northeast of Satao there is Kalinda (luxurious tented camp) and Crocodile Camp. Both of those are near the Sala Gate. Not sure if this helps any ...

SusanLynne:

Thanks so much for looking into it. All of them are south of Ithumba. I looked into Kalilinda and it was $740.00 per night for one person!! It did look beautiful but my one night sleep is not worth that!! Perhaps I'd best think about sleeping in the vehicle at that rate!!

It is possible since the northern part of Tsavo was closed off to tourists for so long due to poaching that there aren't any accomondations in the Ithumba area. Will let you know upon my return.

Thanks again.

hi, i know this thread is a bit old from Jan. but here it goes. north of the galana river in tsavo east is closed off to tourist. except for me.
i say that becasue i have friends in the kws. my tour op in kenya knows many of the kws. so i am able to get permission. a patrick reynolds used to have safari camps in the tiva, athi rivers areas. no more though. i expect to visit that area in sept 2004. with permission. if you need any info let me know.
thanks, david

TuskerDave:

The last information I have is that you do indeed need to get permission from KWS and take an armed ranger with you (at your expense). Patrick's Camp is seasonal and not open all the time.

hi jan, thats what i was trying to say. the same as in your reply. my tour op told me he is not doing those there anymore. patrick i mean.
sept 2002, with the help of my tour op. we had and escort to the ele poaching site from that march / april before. way north in the forbidden zone. met the 7 rangers who had the gun battle with the poachers. their commander Quri and i still keep in touch by way of VOI STATION.
because of my tour op i was able to do this and have many kws friends now.
no outsider ever went to that area.
also, this sept passing over from tanz.
if the ele translocation is going on. i will be able to spend a few days being a witness to it. it has not started yet.
maybe i'll be lucky!
thanks, david
