Northern Serengeti or Massai Mara in Mid-August

We visited the Mara in Kenya and then the Northern Circuit of Tanzania last August, and the migration in the Mara was spectacular (2nd to 9th August). The Northern Serengeti (Lobo area) was also amazing, but the migration had not reached there yet (12th to 16th August). Had we only visited the Serengeti, we would not have seen the migration. However, even without the migration, we had some of our most spectacular sightings in the Northern Serengeti.

If I were going again and had enough time, I would do both countries. I like the first itinerary that Lynn outlines - it is more or less the one that we followed and we had an amazing journey. If my time was limited and my priority was seeing the migration, then I would go to Kenya only. However, understand that the migration is unpredictable, and that there is no guarantee that the migration will peak in the Mara in August as it did this past year - we were very fortunate with our timing. You need to arrange your itinerary so that, even if you happen to miss the migration, you will still have an amazing trip. With Lynn's proposal, you would have a wonderful holiday whether you catch the migration or not (although it would be difficult to miss following that route).

I realize that you're not likely planning to self-drive, but if you want an idea of what to expect in the Mara and the Northern Circuit of Tanzania in August, then have a look at my trip report and photos. It might help you with your decision.
Happy planning! Robin
