Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

My daughter and I returned last week from a wonderful trip to this beautiful area. Without advanced planning, we met the owner of transkili adventures and he served as our guide (along with a driver) on a safari to Ngorongoro Conservation Area NW of Dar es Salaam. Since animals are always present in the park (with Lake Magadi on the crater floor and the wildlife drawn to it)this won't be a wasted trip. We saw the Big Five (the lion and cheetah were from afar) and the black rhino was spectacular. Serengeti and other national parks and safari sites are in the region, and a wide range of activities can be covered in 2 or 3-day tours. The countryside is beautiful and there are opportunities to see people in their local communities and observe their way of life. Maasai culture is particularly evident. Go and enjoy!

Sounds like you had a fanatastic time. Did the Transkili owner say anything about future limitations on crater drives? Full day or half days? There seems to be some confusion over what will happen after July 1, 2005.
