Newsweek: Gorillas on the cover
 

To add to the thread about the latest DRC gorilla murders, ( http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=4 )

My received my Newsweek in the mail today - cover date Aug 6th. On the cover is a portrait of a gorilla and there are two articles in the magazine. Much of the information (perhaps the vast majority) is a repeat of what we've already seen here and in the various links people posted.

What I find to be a good part of the Newsweek article is that a LOT more people read Newsweek than read the blogs at Wildlife Direct or National Geographic, etc. Even though a lot of people may not take the time, energy and money to go see the gorillas, I don't think many want to see them slaughtered. Does it make a difference to the plight of the gorilla that they are featured in Newsweek? Who knows, and perhaps not, but at least the news of these murders is being brought to the forefront.

For those that are especially sensitive to it, there are several pictures of the murdered gorillas in the magazine. Just an FYI.

Thank you for the heads-up on the Newsweek article. Distressingly sad. About all I can think to do is make sure my World Wildlife Fund membership is up to date. What else can we do to stop this? Perhaps alert other news media to cover this important story?

Let's hope this will result in more support for rangers and protection - Wildlife Direct, Diane Fossey foundation etc.

Oh my, those pictures! I don't know why pictures of murdered animals often move me more than murdered people (except maybe children). I guess it's their innocence and inability to defend themselves. While I had read about the killings and was greatly saddened, those pictures just bring me to tears.

I am so excited that I will get to see the gorillas in Rwanda again early next year. I saw them in 1991 and have longed to return ever since. Anyone who has sat with them knows the feeling, and anyone who is considering going to see them should definitely do it.
