New Poster - Travelling to Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania

Hi!

I am a new poster here but have been "lurking" for several months while planning our trip to Africa.

I am travelling with my parents to Egypt, Kenya and Tanzania. We leave in less than two weeks and will be in Africa for four weeks total. This is a very exciting trip for all of us.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have gained so much useful information and valuable tips from reading this site. Thank you so much!

March 15 - return to Toronto via Amsterdam

So there it is!

My parents are retired and I am taking an extended vacation from work for this trip. My dad has been working very hard on the planning of this trip since last Easter.

I am just not sure about the amount of time we are spending in Alexandria, but it is something that my parents want to do and it may be a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of travelling.

You aren't driving from Alexandria to Dashure, are you? That would be better done from Cairo.

No, I see, it says drive to Alex VIA Dashure. I guess you'll go down there first and then hit the highway.

So you have 3 days in Alex. Relax one day, maybe catch the National Museum. Another do some touring of the sites - Roman, Islamic and modern. Another day take a day trip out to El Alamein - that may be why your dad wants to be there so long so make sure you let him see that if you can.

Enjoy.

Yes you are right Casual Cairo, we will go to Dashure on the way to Alexandria.

My Dad is very interetsed in El Alamein. We are visiting there on the 27th.

I have a question for you...I have been following the daily weather in Cairo. It is typically so cool at this time of year? I hope it warms up a just a bit!

Jan and Feb are very cold here (for us). We've recently (last 3 or 4 days) been having a heat wave actually.

We are in the northern hemisphere and it is winter time here.

Brrrr! Comfy down duvet, here I come tonight!

March 7-10 Masai Mara
March 10-12 Serengeti
March 12-14 Ngorongoro2)

Question?
1) How are you getting from Masai Mara to the Serengeti?
- if driving, be prepared for anywhere from 8-10/hrs.
- if flying via Nairobi to Kilimanjaro and then flight to Serengeti, also a fairly long day, but not at brutal on the body bumping along some nasty, bumpy roads.
2) Where are you staying in the Serengeti?
- as the migration is in the Serengeti (Southeast) and/or Ndutu area of the NCA

... overall though, it's a great itinerary; nice to be able to take a month for holiday

Thanks Casual Cairo...I guess the cooler weather will be better for site seeing overall. Considering the waether I am coming from it will be an improvement!

Hi sandi,

1. We are driving! We have no internal flights in the safari portion of the tour. I have read different viewpoints about the experience of driving versus flying here on the forums. I will stock up on Advil!

2. In the Serengeti we are staying at the Serengeti Serena Lodge.

It is nice to take a month. I am really looking forward to the time off work. I had to carry over a week's vacation from last year and use all my 2010 vacation in one go!

silleb -

If only to the Serengeti Serena, then figure 8/hrs drive time from the Mara. Maybe arrange to stop for lunch along the road besides Lake Victoria or at Speke's Bay Lodge.

Good idea, in addition to Advil or other "drugs" is the blow-up neck pillow used on airlines as a back or bum cushion for those long drives.

Enjoy!
