New Kenya Constitution voting---everything ok???

Just wondering if anyone has any updated/inside information on how things are in Kenya with the voting for a new constitution? Is the voting process completed now?

I was a little concerned when I read a brief story in the local newspaper about it that mentioned it was the first election since the violence that occurred after the last election. I was a little more reassured as I listened to public radio on my way to work this am when they reported that there was no violence and it seemed all was going well. Comment was made, though, that the Rift Valley residents were opposed, while the rest of Kenya was more in favor.

Any comments?

I'm the first to reply to my own post!

One more question,,,just what does this new constitution actually mean for the people of Kenya?

Hi elizabethj

Very good question!

I am also interested in that but sure you will get the best answers from Kenyans themselves who you find on Facebook.

Looks very positive for Kenya. Here's a piece from today's NYT:

And, an update from Gamewatchers' Facebook page:

The National Referendum for a new constitution was held on 4th August with a big majority voting in favour. Voting took place peacefully at over 27,000 polling stations without a single incident of violence. Leaders from all sides accepted the result as the will of the people. This marks a new beginning for Kenya.Visitors can be assured this is a peaceful and democratic country where they will be made very welcome!

You can read all about it in the local papers: http://www.nation.co.ke/

Thanks for your responses- spassvogel, crosscheck and sallysaab.

Sounds like overall a good thing, but possibly some bumps in the roads ahead.

Makes me stop and think about what I have and how much is taken for granted. Hadn't given it much thought when I was planning this trip, but thinking about it now.

72% voter turnout....now that's impressive!
