New book - The Fate of Africa

This isn't travel related at all, but I thought it might be of interest to some of us. There's a new book just published called "The Fate of Africa" by Martin Meredith. I don't know this author, but he's written quite a few books on African politics and history. This latest was reviewed Wednesday in the Wall Street Journal, and there are some reviews of it on Amazon.com. It's a history of Africa since de-colonization, and apparently is incredibly thorough, as well as incredibly readable, even though it's 700 pages long. According to the reviews, while Meredith acknowledges the problems of the colonial legacy, he doesn't flinch at severe criticism of most of the governments after de-colonization either.

I have no room on my shelves for a 700-page tome, so I put a hold on it at my local library. When I get it, I'll let you all know what I think.

The experience of living in Johannesburg many years ago got me really interested in African history and politics, and after I came back to the US, I actually enrolled in University courses in the subject. It will be interesting to me to see how the viewpoint of this book compares to the views prevalent in US academe in the late 1980's.
