New BBC Series

Tonight sees the start of a new BBC series called Planet Earth. So everyone in the UK set your videos (or hardrives).

Some video footage has already been posted on the BBC site including some fantastic footage of Wild Dogs hunting impala in the Okavango (shot from helicopter) and swimmimg elephants also in the Okavango.

To view this footage go to:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/...rth/realmedia/

The Wild Dog footage can be found under any of the Programmes, Living Organisms or Habitat menus.

Alternatively you can use the Planet Explorer here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/...arth/flashapp/

Unfortunately it says the fottage is only available to the UK but I don't know how true this is.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for this -- I live a generally TV-free life, but I think I'll make an exception for this one!

Cheers,
Julian

HI Tanky,

Just watched the dog clip -- very impressive! It definitely made me glad that I'll have 6 whole days in Wild Dog Central in Botswana (2 Kwando, 3 Linyanti, and 1 Selinda).

Cheers,
Julian

I've been eagerly awaiting this series (sorry I didn't think to post it here) and can't wait to watch this first episode!

jasher Mar 5th, 2006 08:59 AM

Kavey,

Is there any chance you'll be taping it? I'm committed to a black tie event tonight, and next weekend is 6 Nations so I doubt there will be a free TV anywhere around here for people who prefer their wildlife with four legs rather than two1

Cheers,
Julian

We don't have a video recorder - only SKY and I don't have a way of getting SKY recordings off the box and onto tape at the moment!

:(

I BET BET BET this will be repeated though as it's a really high profile, high budget series so they'll be wanting to make most of it.

SORRY!

Kavey Mar 5th, 2006 09:08 AM

PS I'll record it on SKY+ anyway as I'm hoping to buy a DVD recorder to be able to record stuff off there for watching later ... won't be for some time but I'll try and keep the recording incase you can't find a repeat.

Hi Julian,

I'm going to Lebala (3), Laggon (3) and Kwara (2) later this year and hope to see some Wild Dogs.

I saw a pack of fifteen in the Khwai area last year use the exact tactics as described in the clip. They were more successful though as they caught a baby impala. We followed them for about two hours as they hunted - it was amazing how much distance they covered.

Cheers,
Gary.

All I can say is wow!

Hi Gary,

Maybe we cross paths at Kwando. When is your trip......i start at Lagoon Aug 22 (3N), Lebala (4N), Kwara (3n).....

Unfortunately, i live in India, so i will have to wait for the series to make it to Animal planet later or for it to be released on dvd......

Hari

hi all,

The wild dogs are the santawani pack and the filming was mainly done at Chitabe. Kenny was telling me all about it during my stay. Many of you would have seen the film camp near the gomoti channel too

Ciao

Really enjoyed the first of the series... particularly the combination of aerial shots with ground level shots... it gave a much broader view of what was going on and was also just stunning for both landscapes and large volume migrations.

Julian, I'll keep it on my Sky box but no way of copying it off there yet.

Hi

The Planet Earth series is being repeated early evenings on Saturday for those who missed it- about 6.30 I think?

jasher Mar 7th, 2006 07:51 AM

Hello Kate,

I didn't realise you're in the UK. It is being repeated on Saturday, but given the 6 Nations match that starts that afternoon...

Cheers,
Julian

Tanky Mar 7th, 2006 12:06 PM

Julian,

I have the episode on my PC...I can pop it on a CD and post it to you if you like. You'd have to watch it on a PC though.

My email address is [email protected] if you'd like to send me an address to post it to.

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi Gary,

A very nice person (Simon) has already done so -- thanks for the offer!

Cheers,
Julian

Kavey Mar 8th, 2006 02:16 AM

Julian
I'm glad you've got Simon's email - he emailed me mentioning he had the episode on DVDr and I didn't think you'd mind me passing on your email address!

BTW I also recorded a new series called Equator recently, (I'll have to check which channel) and watched the first one last night. Very much enjoyed it.

Also caught most of a documentary called "Congo" which I had seen before a year or so back. I REALLY enjoyed this again and would recommend you watch it if you see it listed.
