And maybe we can execute speeders, too. I agree, we should use the harshest penalty for every transgression, no matter the intent, or lack thereof.

And where do you think all the other lodges are disposing of their waste?

So these guys had an incident and now they will put up a fence, it doesn't solve the problem, the elephant falling in is a symptom and not the cause... We are the cause!

So, Mkhonzo, are you suggesting we not go on safari, or not "go" while on safari?!

I found that funny.

The irony is that without "us" that elephant was probably as good as dead.

Ha! Any tented camp charging $500 a night should be able to afford a $20 cover for their sewage latrine.

This is simply a case of being careless.

If you read the history of the elephant orphans rescued by the Sheldrick Centre, several have come from just this type of situation. I absolutely agree that an open sewage pit should be covered! So should garbage dumps at the camps. Read "A Primate's Memoir" for the story on that.

There is an article in this week's Ngami Times online regarding the handling of grey water at Vumbura Plains - http://ngamitimes.com - scroll down a bit.
