need an excellent digital camera
 

For my daughter's birthday and our trip to France. She's a novice and stb 14 but she wants it to take video also. Any ideas for something close to $200. This is way out of my realm so I'm looking to my clever Fodorite friends for advice. thank you

A pocket camera by Nikon or Canon. Maybe 4 or 5 mega pixels. With optical zoom lens. Most all of these cameras take video, but, check to make sure it also has sound with video. Look for last years model, being discounted. Are you in the USA? If so, then go to a large computer/TV/camera store and check out what they have. Circuit City, Best Buy, and Frys are three stores that we have a lot of in California.

I like my Nikon Coolpix. It's 3x optical zoom, 5 megapixels, easy to figure out, my first digital camera to get me used to the technology.

The last year's model advice is great for finding a bargain.

Another source of info would be her friends, if they can keep a secret. The kids are up on all the latest technology and may give you a 14-year old's perspective.

She will need a couple of memory cards and spare batteries. So plan on another $50, at least.

My 5 mg Sony takes great photos. I've had several enlarged and they're awesome. My son couldn't believe they came from a digital camera.
