Namibia - car rental price

Is $120.00 per day an outlandish price for a 4 door car with standard transmission, unlimited mileage, and including all insurance? On my last trip to Italy, I paid about the same, but was just curious if anyone else has had an experience in Namibia.

Thank you

Ouch!! We just paid 35 euros per day (for 2 weeks) for a 2 door, standard, unlimited miles and super insurance coverage. We booked through Der Tour, a German travel agency that used Hertz. The rate for the same car through other agencies was about 50 euros. Are you talking about a 4 wheel drive?

Hi Peep,
This was not for a 4x4 al all, but on the Hertz and Avis websites. For an intermediate 4 door automatic. Is Der Tour in Germany or elsewhere? I also thought of contacting directly The Cardboard Box in Windhoek. Do you have any other suggestions as you have been there. Not to long ago I did follow your progress making all your plans, but lost track. Hope you had a marvelous time. Our time there will be Feb. 2004 onwards for several weeks after 12 days in Tanzania.
Any tips would be very helpful.

lflower - your initial post said you were quote $120/day all inclusive for a "standard" - yet this last post indicates an "automatic".

When we were pricing cars for proposed Namibia trip (which we subsequently have postponed for a later time), the price for an "automatic", all inclusive of super cover insurance, did come to about $120/day. The only reason we were looking at automatic was so that I could share in the driving, but if either of you can drive standard, and sharing the driving is of no consequene, go with standard and the price will go down quite a bit.

So are you talking "standard" or "automatic".

Here's their (German) website. http://www.dertour.de/
You might try contacting travel agencies where you live and maybe you can find a tour company with rates comparable to DerTour. The quote I got from Cardboard Box was much higher. They did book our accommodations and I highly recommend them for that! We had a fantastic trip! I don't know where you're from, but keep in mind they drive on the left so a standard is a bit trickier than an automatic if you're not used to that. We put 3500km on our rent car! If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to try and help.

Dear Sandi and Peep,
Thank you very much for both responses. Yes, I did make a mistake with "standard transmission." We need an automatic! No can drive a standard on the other side of the road! We have driven all over England and South Africa and lived to tell about it. But, the standard is just to much to think about. I will try the German website to see what they come up with. Otherwise, we will just have to pay what the going rate is. I really can understand why the rates are high - all sorts of things can happen. Thanks to you both. Peep, did you post your trip on Fodors?

I posted a bit under "2 weeks in Namibia!" If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Dear Peep,
I know this is a bit late in responding and I hope that you get my thanks! We are on to Avis, Hertz and Cardboard Box at this point. Will keep you posted. Our travels will take us to London for a week ( renting a flat ), then on to Tanzania for 12 days - from there, we fly to Windhoek. NO reservations in Namibia for us in mid Feb. After doing SA, Zambia, and Botswana, this time we are going to pretend that we are in Europe or elswhere. Drive and see the country. We do have a good hotel in Windhoek arriving. Thank you for Der Travel - I was unable to open their website. Best,

I travel to Namibia every year and also must have an automatic car. Recently I have been booking through Autoeurope. They are a consolidator and contract with the major car rental companies for discounted rates; consequently, they are slightly cheaper than booking directly with Avis, Hertz, etc. I usually do not buy the extra insurances as they are covered by my credit card and it makes the price considerably lower.

www.autoeurope.com

Rental cars are are expensive in Namibia because the sand and gravel roads causes a lot of damage to the vehicles.

I can recommend Elena Travel Services,
http://www.namibweb.com/rent.html.

I didn't hire a car but they transfers to and from Okonjima for me. Arrangements and service were fine and they were significantly cheaper than Cardboard Box.

Cheers,

Polly.

We just got back from Namibia - and found DH COULD drive a stickshift on the opposite side of the road. However, it was always interesting to see if he was starting out in 1st, 3rd, or reverse! I was never really sure how he got in reverse without knowing it - you had to push down to get into it.....

You can also try this Namibia (German) website.
http://tinyurl.com/5yoava They have FAQ section, a forum, all kinds of info on renting vehicles, if I interpret the site correctly.Seems like a very helpful site.
