Namibia Beachelife and mountains to walk in.

How is Namibia in february. We prefer beach life and mountain walking. We do not prefer too touristy places, but the hotel standard must not be too low. We also want to visit a game park not too far from Windhoek. Any answer would be appreciated. Best regards from Nils

Dear Nils

Namibia does not really have mountains. Maybe a hill here and there.

The beaches are lovely. the only time I have ever seen them crowded was in December. February is good fishing time and it is really excellent fishing waters. i would recommend you try that. There are day trips given by companies who take you fishing and supply all the gear. Just enquire about it when you get there.

Do you have a town in mind at the coast. There are basically 4 you could try. Luderitz: I would strongly recommend it. it is tiny, in the middle of the desert and very German. The houses are built in German style and nearly all the inhabitants speak german. It is isolated and far from anything else and it could be complicated getting there.

Swakopmund: Lovely, most popular of teh lot, about 400 km from Windhoekn also German. This is a very special place.

Walvisbay: Less than 40 km from Swakopmund. thsi si the industrial town of the coast, with harbours, fish factories etc. The coast is the same, but this town just does not have the same cuteness as Swakopmund.

Hentiesbay: This town is just a holiday toen. Most people in Windhoek has holiday houses here and the main attraction is fishing. If you are not into fishing and silent towns outside the holiday season, Henties might be boring.

Please e-mail me if you have questions. ALthough I do not live tehr any more I gre up in Windhoek and spent a large amount of my childhood fishing and enjoying the sea at Hentiesbay.

My the way, the coast can be cold even in summer. It will be very very hot inland and very cool at night at the beach. So pack warmly.

Anneke
