Muthaiga Club-Nairobi

Hi all -- we're are thinking of staying at the Muthaiga Country Club http://www.mcc.co.ke in Nairobi, and I am wondering if anyone has been there or stayed overnight? We opted to stay at a reciprocal club on our trip to Delhi last year, and the accomodations were terrible (twin beds, shower with a bucket, etc.). The website for this club looks very nice. Any first hand observations or advice would be welcome.

Also, does anyone have any dinner recomendations? I've heard the Carnivore is a "must." What about the Norfolk?

Thanks very much!

Carnivore used to be a must, but now that the govt has placed hefty restrictions on the trade of game meat, you really do not have the menu offered before. It is however a well locate drestaurant, so if you are transiting thhrough Wilson airport it makes a neat stop.

If you enjoy curry dishes there are plenty of great eateries. I have in the past thoroughly enjoyed dining at the Pavement. It offers an exceptional menu. it has dishes that fuse asian and african cuisine.

There's a new restaurant at one of the brand new hotels on the way to the airport (JKIA) on the left if you're coming out of Nairobi. It's a Brazillian style restaurant but does game meat... it's nicer, and there's more variety than Carnivour. Had Sunday Lunch there... and had my first taste of camel meat. Interesting. Great salad bar... and eat as much as you can for about 500ksh per head less.

Was at the Norfolk last Sunday Evening and has a nice drink... but not my idea of "travel eating".

Holiday Inn has some nice Mongolian BBQ's.

There are so many places to eat... my top list...

Palaceina
The Rusty Nail

Kenchick (cheap chicken and great fries)

Hi Dot,

I have heard from someone who has recently been there that the Muthaiga Country Club can be a hit or miss. While we lived in Kenya several years ago, it was pretty exclusive but a nice property. I'll see if I can find out more for you.

Hey Pumbavu, Carnivore used to be my old hang out in the 80s, but I'd heard things had changed drastically.

Thanks for info on the new places. Hope I get to try them sometime.

Glad to hear that the Norfolk is still going strong. Recently heard that one of my clients, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts had taken over the management, and that of 4 other Kenyan hotel/resort properties including 'The Ark'.

Mathiue...
I still like Carnivore... but I do think they need to "reinvent" themselves a bit. The idea, the concept is great... but choice, and value for money is on a downward trend.

There're so many places to eat, but in terms of positioning in the mond of the traveller, Carnivore is still at number one. But this new Brazillian place... and the Safari Park Hotel... are good alternatives.
