Morocco Hammans

While in Marraheck and Fes we would love a recommendation to some hammans. My preference would authentic but to get my husband to go Clean has to be the main description. Thanks!

Ahhh, come on....do you have just one you could recommend?

Sorry, I went to one in Tinerhir, and I didn't think I was ready for another in Marrakech! Lonely Planet has some recommendations.

I loved the hammams in Turkey - bright, airy, clean, nice changing area, a lovely experience. I tried two in Morocco and wouldn't recommend - they were cramped, dark, squalid, in cellars. The second one I left before changing.

I think you were just unlucky in Morocco. The riad I stayed in in Essaouira (Lalla Mira) had a hamman in the basement, and although I didn't use it, what I saw from the entrance looked fine. Although it was in the basement!

The one I used in Tinerhir was clearly designed for (and used by) locals rather than tourists, but it was quite clean. I wasn't looking for a spa experience, and appreciated that we were getting scrubbed alongside the locals.

Thanks very much for your time and thoughts. When I was in Turkey 10 years ago I went to one that was beautiful, I was the only non-local and spent a wonderful 2 hours. I convinced my husband to join me when we were out in the wilds in a small village that I don't even remember the name. The hamman was very dirty and he ended up only taking off his shirt and having a great time socializing but did not enjoy the bath experience. I'm going try again in Morocco.
P.S. just got the L.P. book today!
