Morocco
We are couple in our 70's looking to spend 7 days in Morocco in the spring of 24 (after Ramadan). We are well-traveled and have done several driving trips in Europe by ourselves. We are a little concerned about visiting Morocco on our own. Any suggestions on a tour company or do you think we can use the rail system to explore on your own? We are pretty adventurous: jeeping, hiking, walking, etc.

I've been to Morocco a number of times, the first time with small group tour company, Eldertreks. It was in the late '90s & you might read current reviews to see if it might suit. I think it was useful for an introduction, all subsequent visits have been independent. Though I realized during the tour the country would not be difficult to negotiate on my own, still I was glad for the support 1st time out. It was the only tour I've ever done & was quite pleasant. I saw places I would not have if on my own.

When we went to Morocco we traveled exclusively by public transportation--train from Marrakech to Meknčs to Fez, local bus to Azrou and Sefrou, long distance bus back to Marrakech. We had no problems, but then I am fluent in French which is generally the second language in Morocco. In Meknčs we were surrounded by men wishing to be our guide, and I was about to choose one when my sife insisted that it be an English speaking guide, We had one within half an hour who took us to the sights in Meknčs and arranged for a tour of Volubilis and Mouolay Idriss. In Fez we had an official guide from the tourist office for one day. This was back in 1993, and I do not know if there has been a change in Moroccans' attitude toward tourists.

We went to Morocco in 2018 and traveled with a small family company called Moroccan Family tours. The owner, Salem, was our driver and unofficial guide throughout the 2+ weeks we traveled with him. We had a fantastic trip, and he has since become a friend. I can’t recommend him highly enough!
https://moroccan-family.com Here’s my trip report; it’ll give you a good flavor of the variety of places to see in Morocco: https://www.fodors.com/community/afr...urney-1653790/ And if you can, add some more time. There is such a variety of places to see! |
As an alternate suggestion, you could do half and half. Tour the cities yourself and hire a private driver/guide service to do the driving. This worked well for us. We started in Marrakech for several days, and then the guide picked us up and stayed with us for 3 nights while we went south through the Atlas and Anti-Atlas mtns to the Sahara etc. Then he dropped us in another town for a few days. After that we took a private taxi to Essaouira for our last few days. It all worked and we didn’t have to deal with the annoyances of a tour. There are lots of reputable private tour companies in Morocco. Lots of shady ones to so you will have to research them.
