More rhinos in Botswana beyond Chief's Island

It was recently posted that 2 rhino were seen in the Vumbura concession, couldn't relocate the post about it on here.

Apparently the African Horseback Safaris folks also spotted 2 rhino, I assume in NG26 since that is where they operate. http://www.africanhorseback.com/june-2008.html

It will be good news if rhino do spread more throughout N. Botswana

To add more NG26 is to the west of Chief's Island and Abu and Seba camps are also in that concession.

Hi Bill,

The other thread is called White Rhinos at Vumbura Plains

The last time I tried a link it did not work but here goes

If these were seen in NG26 then they are either as mobile as WS say or they are just part of the spreading out of the Rhinos introduced to Chiefs Island around 5 years ago provided by those nice people at SANPARKS.

The Rhinos have been spreading since there arrival. Last year, tracks were found in Kwara and with the rhino being located in Kwai. Whilst it sounds a great idea that they are spreading, I am not so supportive.

I agree with the relocating of them back to chiefs as happens. Else they are more prone to poaching, as happened with two, plus the dispersal decreases mating opportunities due to a low population density.

I can agree with some of your points, in particular the difficulty in maintaining protection, but this has to be risked if there is ever to be a viable population.
What I object too is the continuing assertion by some parties that they are responsible when they are not. Minor contributions to funding do not entitle you to take all the credit, after all without South Africa there would be little to re-introduce.
