Morani, Black Rhino at Sweetwater's Dies
Don't recall this being previously resported, but recently advised:
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy-East Africa's largest Black Rhino Sanctuary-sadly reports the death in August of Morani, the tame black rhino, due to natural causes. Rescued after his mother was killed by poachers in Amboseli National Park, the beloved Morani graced the Sanctuary for 19 years, helping to create enormous awareness for black rhino conservation not only within Kenya but around the world. Additional information can be found on the Sweetwater's site. |
That's sad. He was such a character.

Sad news. I remember gingerly feeding Morani at Sweetwaters in
the late 90's Jan |
So sorry to hear this. We really enjoyed meeting him last year -- what a sweetheart, and a very unique story. Thanks for posting the news.

I'm getting old!. It was 89 or 90. I can't find the photos, but I went to Kenya every year around then.

I have a picture of Morani and me on my bookshelf where I see it every day. It was a special treat to actually be able to get "up close and personal" with such a powerful animal during my first trip to Africa in 1998.

Sad news, especially for the staff at Ol Pejeta … they cared for him well. A special experience for everyone who was able to feed him his favorite croton bush.
